To be replaced by a new concept...

The golden-wedged Horizons pavilion “rises majestically from the landscape, its sharply faceted contours sloping gently up into a truncated pyramid.”

Dedicated to humanity's future, Horizons opened on October 1, 1983, under the sponsorship of the General Electric Corporation, as part of phase II of the EPCOT Center theme park at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.

The pavilion featured an in-depth 15 minute ride-through attraction that transported guests into an ingenious 21st century of genetically engineered desert farms, floating undersea cities, and spherical space colonies. In 1993, General Electrics ten year contract expired, and the company decided not to renew. The pavilion remained open until 1994 when it closed. It reopened in 1995 without a sponsor while a neighboring EPCOT Center pavilion was closed for rehab. Horizons closed permanently on January 9, 1999.

Although Horizons was still one of the parks better attractions, Walt Disney Company decided that it was no longer profitable for them to operate it without a sponsor. Only recently have plans been finalized for a space pavilion to take Horizons place. Tragically, as of now, Horizons is almost completely destroyed. The entire back of the pavilion has caved in, and work has started on demolishing the front. The demolition of Horizons brings a sad close to a classic Disney era when attractions were more than simple rides. Even though Horizons may be gone, its inspiring message of "If we can dream it, we can do it" will live on forever.
