MISFITS OF MODERNISM
II: PHILADELPHIA STYLE
Take a new look at
historic preservation at the Recent Past Preservation Network’s
“Misfits of Modernism II: Philadelphia Style” benefit.
This event, hosted by the Recent Past Preservation Network and
Design Within Reach, will showcase the brilliant, but largely
unrecognized, works of historic modern architecture and landscape
design in Philadelphia and its surrounds.
The event will feature
a reception, presentations on endangered buildings, and a silent
auction. All proceeds will benefit RPPN’s fight to save
Richard Neutra’s iconic Gettysburg Cyclorama Center. The
1961 Cyclorama Center, a modernist Cold War-era homage to Abraham
Lincoln and the Gettysburg Address, is immediately threatened
with demolition by the federal government as part of a landscape
redevelopment.
Friday, October 12,
6:30 – 9:00 p.m.
Design Within Reach
– Philadelphia Studio 1710 Walnut Street, Philadelphia,

Drew University's
Historic Preservation Certificate program is pleased to offer
PRESERVING THE RECENT PAST
This one-day workshop will explore architecture of the 20th century.
Is architecture of the recent past really historic? Is it worth
preserving? From High Style to vernacular interpretation, participants
will gain an understanding of the evolution of modern architecture,
focusing on 20th century design and use of modern materials. Using
case studies, the workshop will highlight the specific challenges
in preserving architectural resources from the recent past.
Taught by
the staff of the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office, this
program will cover regulatory and planning issues as well as conservation
challenges specific to modern materials, and take a look at trends
and advocacy from the state and national perspective.
Date: Saturday,
November 10th from 9 am to 4 pm
Location: Madison, NJ
Cost: $100 (lunch included)
